Flying Tips A Real Rule of Thumb
Flying tips you can count on your fingers or at least your thumbs. On a cross country trip? Leave all of your plotters and other measuring devices at home? Plotter blew out of the open cockpit? We don't need no stinkeen plotter. We've got our thumbs! If you need a quick measurement on a sectional chart you can use the distance from the tip of your thumb to the bend in the knuckle. That is about 10 nautical miles. If you're planning a trip to Oshkosh, you might want to use a real plotter but in a pinch, the thumb will do.
